BethAnn Lawson

Working as a graphic designer and illustrator for over 30 years, I’ve spent my life studying the way light, shape and color work together.  My large, colorful paintings allow me the freedom to express myself in ways my long, commercial career never could.  I can lose myself for hours inside each one, as I take apart the images and carefully put them back together emphasizing colors, rhythms and patterns, bridging the gap between nearly abstraction up close and more figurative from a distance.

Heavily influenced by my father, a surrealist painter and a founding member of the San Francisco Street Artist’s Association, he taught me virtually everything he knew, from how to mix color, to how hold a brush before I was scarcely able to speak.  After he passed in 2011, I was compelled to follow in his large footsteps and have worked hard, developing my current painting style and voice.

I consider my style very contemporary.  I am not afraid to use bold shadows and striking color, capturing little glimpses of life containing whimsy, the secrets of strangers, and the amazing architecture of both nature and man.

Introduction to Drawing

"DRAWING BASICS 101!  is the foundation for all your future art undertakings. Even if you think you can’t draw a stick figure, instructor and artist Katherine Wright will teach you how! You will develop basic drawing skills using an approach that combines left and right brain abilities, such as skills for organizing visual materials, simplification of subjects, blocking of elemental shapes, and understanding light and shadow.

Just like scales for a musician or drills for soccer, doing one thing at a time helps us build confidence & not worry about perfection

Most of all, you will thoroughly enjoy yourself in a fun and non-intimidating environment.  Great for beginners and a refresher for all levels. Material list will be simple and affordable.

“Drawing slows me down and brings me into the moment. When I draw, I’m taking time to connect with the subject and develop an awareness that enriches my entire artistic practice.”

Have you ever mixed two colors and got a color nowhere near what you expected and wanted? If so, then this workshop is for you.

Alicia Harvey will tell you the secret to successful color mixing in a playtime format. You can bring all your acrylics to sort by warm and cool primaries to mix. If you don’t own acrylics, come anyway and experiment with colors brought by Alicia.
