Karen Towey has loved color since childhood. There were only ten crayons in her first crayon box—she colored with nine of them and ate one. Thankfully her diet has improved, but her love of color never changed.

Today, Karen is a Pacific Northwest artist, longtime art teacher, and firm believer that everyone can learn to paint. Inspired by Washington’s mountains, forests, gardens, and shoreline, she creates colorful watercolor, acrylic, and oil paintings that celebrate the beauty of the Northwest. After decades of teaching art in public and private schools, she now shares her simple, encouraging approach through classes at Red Sky Gallery and her bestselling watercolor worksheets. She also offers Pacific Northwest prints, greeting cards, and her whimsical Bigfoot collection, inviting artists of every age to discover the joy of creating.

Drawing the Pacific Northwest

Discover the beauty of the Pacific Northwest—one sketch at a time. Whether you’re picking up a pencil for the first time or looking to strengthen your drawing skills, this six-week course will teach you how to truly see like an artist. In a relaxed, encouraging environment, you’ll learn shading, perspective, texture, composition, and techniques for drawing landscapes, wildlife, and natural objects. Each class builds on the last as you complete beautiful finished drawings while growing your confidence and creativity. By the end of the course, you’ll have a portfolio of original drawings, a stronger understanding of drawing fundamentals, and the skills to continue sketching the world around you.
