Don Wodjenski is a Northwest native living on Whidbey Island, Wa. He is an artist, craftsman, musician, author, and educator; having taught Photography and Visual Arts at the secondary and college level on Whidbey Island for over 25 years. Don has focused on woodturning as a means of creating vessels which through a combination of skill and material he calls, Form and Reveal. As the artist, Don creates the form; shape, size, and figure. The wood, in turn, reveals its characteristics of pattern, texture, and color. Don additionally combines mineral accents, shou sugi ban surfaces, pierced texturing, and carving to some of his work. Don often turns green (high moisture) wood which alters the original form as it dries. These unpredictable alterations in finished bowl forms what Don calls, Wabi-Sabi Ware. “Woodturning is a creative meditation between me and my chosen piece of wood. Opening the form on the lathe opens the possibilities I consider in designing a finished piece. Each species brings its own characteristics to the design. The finished bowl combines aesthetic choice with turning skills to produce a one of a kind expression in wood, both beautiful and useful.”
